Paint the Uptown with City Canvas!

Paint the Uptown with City Canvas!

Lead artist, Dave SG and the students of Westlake Middle School have been working hard painting the 20 mural canvases, which will grace the sides of 5 traffic signal boxes in the Uptown/Lake Merritt neighborhood.  Dave's final designs depict iconic images of Oakland's landscape with overlays of students from Westlake Middle School - an inspiration from the students' desire to literally see themselves represented in the City and the neighborhood.

On Saturday, May 22nd from 10-1, the community can get in on the painting fun! Join us in the parking lot of the First Congregational Church at 2501 Harrison Street to contribute to this exciting and innovative public art project.  Refreshments will be served, courtesy of Whole Foods.

No experience necessary! Just a desire to paint, a committment to youth, and a love of Oakland!

About City Canvas

City Canvas is a grassroots project intended to foster neighborhood identity across the East Bay through community-driven public art. A collaboration of seasoned teaching artists, community builders, city planners, and arts administrators, the City Canvas team was brought together by a common desire to contribute to the vibrancy of our cities. City Canvas will create opportunities for shared visioning and creation of public art in neighborhoods across Oakland and Berkeley through partnerships with city agencies, neighborhood schools, businesses, residents and local artists.
