Isis Genesis will break down the barriers of traditional conceptions of soul music while headlining Fresh Steps this week.

Each month, Supreme Aebilities and Fux Entertainment choose a theme that represents the happenings of that time and create a lineup of local artists.

"This month we are celebrating Juneteenth," said Aquil Rasheed, CEO of Fux Entertainment. "This show is called 'Cause We're Free.'"

Fresh Steps has been a monthly event since January 2009 and now every third Sunday of the month, 21 and ups can look forward to enjoying the music of local artists at Luka's Taproom.

Isis Genesis will be a sure hit with her inventive sound that combines soul with electronic music. See a video of her tearing up the stage below.

"She has more of a rock sound, but still does a lot of the basic elements in funk and soul, it's a conglomerate of music and a lot of people have taken to the sound," Rasheed said.

Other key performers include Maya Songbird and Deja Bryson. Local poet and playwright Chinaka Hodge also will perform.

Fresh Steps continues to provide live sound and good conscious music this month at Luka's Taproom. The event is June 20 and is open to people ages 21 and up. Doors open at 9 p.m. and admission is $5 after 10:30 p.m.
