As part of the school’s continuing effort to expose students to different career pathways, EXCEL High will hold a career fair on Friday, June 4 from 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM. The event, hosted by EXCEL’s Transnational Academy of Business and its Law and Government Academy, will bring a wide range of professionals to West Oakland’s McClymonds Educational Complex.

Participating business partners include The Port of Oakland, Triton, Atlas (College of Alameda), California Maritime Academy, the United States Coast Guard, the Rose Foundation, Representatives from the California State Attorney General’s Office, Representatives from the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office (Deputy District Attorneys John Creighton and Venus Johnson, DA Inspector Robert Chenault and Head of DA Victim/Witness Assistance Division Lisa Foster) and the Rose Foundation.

The Career Fair is meant to introduce high school students to exciting career possibilities. They can then acquire specialized knowledge to help them succeed in these fields through EXCEL’s career academies, which provide a background in law and international trade, transportation and logistics. Critical partnerships with the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office, the International Trade, Transportation, and Logistics Advisory Board, The Office of Senator Loni Hancock and other agencies provide reach beyond the classroom to provide student with real world, interactive learning opportunities. The Academy approach has helped fuel academic progress at McClymonds, which, in 2005, saw all its graduates enter a four-year college.

“Too often, kids are focused on a narrow band of potential jobs and not the full range of professional opportunities or the skills required to succeed in them,” explained EXCEL Principal Yetunde Reeves. “Our academies expose students to the various career possibilities which await, and provide hands-on experience to help them identify a field of interest.”

The emphasis on academies results from OUSD’s belief that college and career readiness requires:

·         A challenging academic component that prepares students for success in college and apprenticeships

·         A demanding technical component that delivers concrete knowledge and skills through four or more technical courses

·         A work-based learning component that combines internships, virtual apprenticeships and school-based enterprises

·         Comprehensive support services and safety nets, such as reading and math intervention, counseling and other supports necessary to ensure academic and career success

On Friday, student orientation will take place from 9:30 AM to 10:00 AM. Students will then rotate to different stations to gather information about various fields and interact with representatives from each profession. These sessions can help students gain the confidence and motivation necessary to pursue their field of interest through the courses provided in each academy.
