Some of you may know about the Oakland Food Policy Council (OFPC), which was
seeded in 2006 with Williams Energy Settlement funds from the City of
Oakland
(view PDF of resolution here). The
OFPC, in partnership with the HOPE Collaborative, the City of
Oakland, the County of Alameda, and
various other individuals,
agencies, and
organizations working to improve food access and places for physical
activity in
Oakland’s underserved neighborhoods, was incubated
at a
great organization here in Oakland called Food First, which continues to serve as our
nonprofit fiscal agent and provides us with many resources, including
the best
team of interns I have ever had the pleasure to work with.
As the OFPC becomes more established
and continues
to stretch its wings, we find ourselves at a crossroads. We have had
continuing
support from the San
Francisco Foundation and a few other grant
resources, but our budget remains modest for the big work we have laid
out for
ourselves. To help spread public awareness of this important grassroots
body in
Oakland, and in order to build credibility and goodwill with more
grant-making
agencies, we have launched a campaign whereby each OFPC member reaches
out to
his or her own network of friends, family, organizations and community
members
to help raise funds. If everybody receiving this note from me were to
contribute $5, I would far exceed the individual expectation set for
each board
member. Your donation is 100% tax-deductible and can be done with our secure
online payment system.
The OFPC has just established
our important policy
priorities
for our 2010 strategic plan for transforming the Oakland food system.
If, after
reading about these priorities, you feel that our work is critical and
that you
are able to make even a nominal gesture of support for our work, please donate
now. If possible, send me a quick note to make me aware of your
donation.
Every dollar makes a difference.
Regardless of your ability to
contribute, thank you for your interest and support! Please forward
this
message to anyone you know who may be interested in our work and
supporting our
cause.
The mission of the Oakland Food Policy Council (OFPC) is to establish an equitable and sustainable food system in Oakland, California.
The OFPC will:
* Strive to ensure access to healthy, affordable food within walking distance of every Oakland resident;
* Bring underserved neighborhoods to the food policy table and increase “food literacy” among Oakland residents;
* Put food, hunger, and food systems on the City of Oakland’s agenda and contribute to the national dialog on food policy;
* Turn the Oakland food system into an engine for local economic development and involve local and regional agricultural communities.
