The Peralta Federation of
Teachers has unanimously endorsed Abel Guillén for reelection to the
Peralta Community College District Board of Trustees.
In his four years on the board, Guillén has consistently supported the
mission of the Peralta faculty, and demonstrated a strong commitment to
Peralta students and the wider East Bay community.
"As a trustee and board
president, Abel Guillén has been open and responsive on issues coming
before the board. His willingness to engage with the people most
directly affected by the Board's actions - and not just with
administrators and those eager to do business with the district - has
been exemplary. His leadership should serve as a model for other
trustees, current and future," said Michael Goldstein, Chair of the
Political Action Committee of the Peralta Federation of Teachers, AFT
Local 1603, and an English Professor at Laney College.
Guillén was elected in 2006 to
represent Area 7 of the Peralta Community College District, which
includes the Adams Point, Chinatown, Lake Merritt, San Antonio,
Temescal, Uptown and West Oakland neighborhoods. The first in his family
to graduate from college, Guillen is the first Latino elected to the
Board of Trustees and the youngest ever to serve as Board President.
"I am honored to have again
earned the support of the Peralta Federation of Teachers. I look forward
to continuing to work with all of our Peralta partners to meet the
needs of our students and improve the transparency and accountability of
the Peralta District's operations during these tough budget times,"
Guillén said.
The PFT PAC looks forward to
four more years of collaboration with Guillén, and is committed to
working to ensure that he is able to continue his valuable efforts on
behalf of faculty, staff, students and the community.
The Peralta Federation of Teachers, American Federation of Teachers
Local 1603, represents the interests and ideals of the more than 1,000
