Within the Hour: City Council Budget Meeting

Oakland City Hall

City Hall survived the Loma Pieta Earthquake in 1989…but how will it emerge from the city's earth-shaking fiscal crisis?

Tonight the other shoe drops. How can Oakland rectify the $31 million defecit in its $400 million general fund? Come to the meeting to make your voice heard! Some of the issues on the table include:

    •    1. Cutting anywhere from 178 to 216 police officer jobs, according to today's Oakland Tribune
    •    2. Changing the language of 2004's Measure Y
    •    3. Closing Oakland's public pools
    •    4. Increasing taxes, including raising the sales tax and adding a $360-year parcel tax

Catch the action at City Hall tonight, when the City Council convenes at 5:30 p.m. If you would like to watch the procedings, tune into KTOP, or stream the video to your computer.

How will these decisions change the Town as we know it? Open your ears, Oakland and let your thoughts be heard.

When Desley Brooks is wrong, she's very wrong. Tonight she was spot on to oppose a budget that didn't come close to balancing the overhanging retirement obligations.
