NIMBY's "Do It For Haiti" event

If Haiti were going to throw an event for someone, it would have tons of live music and dance, fresh indoor and outdoor art installations, performers, great food, and inspiring speakers. It seems only right that an event benefitting Haiti would feature those things, and "Do It For Haiti" is poised to do just that on Saturday, February 20, from 2:00 p.m. to midnight, at 8410 Amelia Street in Oakland.

"Do It For Haiti" is sponsored by NIMBY, which will be accepting donations of food and clothing for Haiti earthquake victims, and partnering with Sirona Cares' network of schools, churches and orphanages in Haiti. All donations will be delivered by the U.S. Coast Guard, and all proceeds from the event will be donated to organizations directly involved with Haiti relief efforts.

Partnering organizations inlcude: the Bellot Idovia Foundation in Oakland and Haiti, CARE, Catholic Relief Services, Sirona Cares, and the What If Foundation in San Francisco and Haiti, and Zanmi Lakay in Pacifica and Haiti. Each of these organizations is also represented by speakers with direct knowledge of what it will take to get Haiti back on its feet.

Just because the community wants to "Do It For Haiti" doesn't mean it doesn't get an insane amount of entertainment--over the course of eight full hours--for the $10 admission. In addition to the opportunity to support relief efforts and get involved with organizations that are making a difference in Haiti right now, when is the next time the community might have the chance to see scores of performers and artists in one place, including art events just for kids? In addition to the D.I.Y and D.I.F.H. projects for all ages, performers and artists include: the SF Mime Troupe, Kalbass Kreyol, The Bodice Rippers, The Joe Rutt Band, Marisa Lenhardt, The San Francisco Early Music Society, Chicken John & Dr. Hal, the Sustainable Living Road Show, Life Size Mouse Trap, the Flaming Lotus Girls, robots by Justin Gray, The Museum of Unnatural Selection by Jen Forbes, Jon Behrens' Omega Recoil, Goat Man Dan, Therm / Exxotherm, Jamie Vaida, The Disgusting Spectacle, Feng Jin, and Robot by Adam Ebel.
