Did you know that North Oakland has its own pair of hawks who have come and nested for at least the past eight years?

According to a neighbor, they are Cooper's hawks, and they have hatched four fledglings, two males and one female. These hawks grow up quickly; after a few weeks, the babies will fly off to establish their own areas, and their parents will stay for the rest of the year.

Here are some cool photos, thanks to local birdwatcher (and resident) Mary Malec.

The Oakland Local Editorial Team is made up of Kwan Booth, Amy Gahran, Irene Florez, Michelle Fitzhugh-Craig, Eric Arnold, Jennifer Inez Ward, CB Smith-Dahl, Meg Bertoni, Susan Mernit, Tehea Robie, Ruth Miller, Debi Mason, and others.

The hawks fly over small dogs and cats, wistfully looking down, wishing that either the dogs and cats were smaller or that they were much bigger.

Len--wonderful image!

Great...Let those Hawks be because they eat pigeons. It will keep the pigeon population in check!

I had one in my yard yesterday here in Maxwell Park.. came out to notice a ton of feathers in my side yard and thought another damn cat had killed a bird. Have been trying to watch over baby mocking birds around my house.. anyhow, then noticed a pigeon by my recycling/trash barrels, looked up to the left and there he or she was sitting in my loquat tree about 10 ft away, a gorgeous cooper hawk. unfortunately, I lost my camera charger so I couldn't get a picture.

when I came home 7 hours later the cooper hawk was still in the loquat tree but had dragged the pigeon closer.. I sat and watch it quietly for a while.. it watched me with equal vigiliance, stretched out its yellow legs slowly and then its wings and flew off..

this morning all thats left are feathers. he even ate the legs .???
