locally grown zucchini

I was entertained by these recent threads in my neighborhood. Sharing vegetables, eggs, wine. Manure from chickens, ducks, and goats for compost. Vegetable scraps as feed for rabbits, ducks, and goats.

Names and other details changed to protect identities.

3 threads: "Experience with Composting", "Large Zucchini", and "person with rabbits"
These occurred on the JustMyNeighbors.com neighborhood system, which I created. Please check it out.
Enjoy!

Experience with Composting?

My husband wants a compost tumbler for his birthday. After researching this a bit, I realize that getting the desired results may not be as easy as it seems. Does anyone have any experience with composting and suggestions for the types of system that will work in our climate? I really don't want to buy an expensive item only have it sit in our yard unused.

Any feedback would be great!

Jill

  • To all composters in the area: If you are having trouble getting your compost to heat up, we have two green bins full of pine shavings mixed with chicken and duck manure. This is a great way to heat up your compost and results in great plant food in a few weeks. We usually compost this for use in our garden but we have filled our four compost bins with goat poop and hay. We'd prefer to keep it local rather than give it to Waste Management.

  • Nathan & Family -- thanks again for the poopy wood shavings to add to my compost bin! I love your little farm.

  • There are two paper feed bags of chicken and duck poop waiting at <deleted> for whoever wants it for their compost pile. The stuff in the green bins will be collected Monday morning (tomorrow) so act fast.

    Happy composting,

large zucchini

I discovered some fairly large zucchini on my zucchini plant yesterday. From what I have read, the large zucchini can be cored and then shredded for breads and muffins etc. The grated zucchini can also be frozen for several months.

If you would like one please let me know, as I am not planning to make use of them.

You are also welcome to have some of the smaller ones as they grow....

  • Yum! I love zucchini! Could I please grab a couple?

person with rabbits

I am going to take out the lettuce that has grown too tall in our backyard. Would you like to have it for your rabbits?

  • Jackie,

If the rabbits don't want the lettuce, my chickens and ducks would be happy to eat it.

  • Hey there Nathan,

If you ever want to trade some of your eggs for some home made wine let me know.

  • Hi Jackie,
I have rabbits but I don't know if i'm the "person with the rabbits!" :)
I would love to have some lettuce. I'm trying to grow my own but now, they are only about a half inch tall. hehe!

  • Let me know where to drop it off, I have a lot of it.

  • Jackie,
Thank you very much for the lettuce. I gave them a huge handful last night and they happily munched away on it!
