Oakland's relationship to Hollywood cinema is well known. The city's hometown heroes include such icons as Clint Eastwood, Tom Hanks and Bruce Lee. It's also been the filming site for many a fiction feature including "Made in America" "The Pursuit of Happyness" "Rent" and "The Matrix Reloaded."

Now, the 21st century has brought new views and technologies to focus a lens on our diverse town. It also has allowed older movies to go online and gain new audiences. Here are some documentary/non-fiction takes on Oakland spotted on YouTube – each captures one facet, but none capturing all. Feel free to add your finds in the comments below.

Is it bad to aim for utopia? The tourist board and developer's rose-colored (and promotional) view of Oakland called "Destination Oakland."

A refreshing counterpoint from 2007 that may make you a little nostalgic for the pre-bust East Bay housing boom. A collection of non-profits produced this film - "Oakland Speaks" - on Oakland's development as seen by Oakland residents.

A cynical view of Oakland and its Hipster reputation from San Francisco - "Oakland!"

The (now infamous) "Gang Wars" - Oakland as seen by shock-umentary filmmakers from New York who got their numbers all wrong by using OPD as a primary source.

A much older and less sensationalized documentary about Latino Gangs in Oakland that was featured on PBS in the 80s - "Children of Violence."

There also are many current short-form non-fiction videos being produced every week by many local youth media organizations and news outlets.

Here are a couple of channels with some great films and perspectives you may not have seen before.
