Get out and have fun: Oakland events this weekend, Aug. 6-8

Looking for something to do this weekend? Check out these fun events that the whole family will enjoy.

Friday

On a corner in East Oakland, young men on ballet toes pop and lock, mime-fight and flat foot glide like they’re wearing skates. The rain streams down, tears for a life lost on that same corner. I know you’ve seen the video on YouTube, it went viral. If you haven’t, you should. Google “turf dancing in the rain” - YAK films shot that footage.

Beginning at 7 p.m., you can experience this style of dance live at All Styles 2 on 2 outdoor dance battle. It’s free, on Broadway and First in Jack London Square. I can’t wait!

Saturday

The health care bill got watered down, the FDA is making it virtually impossible for an adult to buy a bottle of kombucha (good for digestion and kidneys), though our babies can buy cancer-causing aspartame products from any corner store.

Keep the spirit of folk medicine alive. Don't miss Billy Sharp’s essential oil remedies and piñata making workshop from 1 to 3 p.m. at Rock Paper Scissors Collective, 2278 Telegraph Ave. in Oakland. Come learn some do-it-yourself self care. The fee is a sliding scale $5-10.

Sunday

Queer families and our straight allies should come out for Hella Gay Good Times, at Pizzialo, 5008 Telegraph Ave., Oakland. All proceeds will be donated to Oakland Pride, to go towards an Oakland LGBTQI community center. Trust me, it’s crucial.

Like any disenfranchised group, we are suffering and we need to socialize with each other outside the bar. The $25 door fee includes performance, beer and pizza.

What are you doing this weekend? Share the good stuff, okay?

The picks were made before I had this info---but for the sake of transparency I should say that this author will be performing poetry at Hella Gay Good Times.
