There was a  dance party, a BBQ, a live DJ, a whole lotta dance workshops, live art by Estria, a panel discussion and both a showing of the new B-Girl documentary, "All The Ladies Say" and an appearance by two of the stars - Lady Champ and Aiko Shirakawa.

The there was Pam the Funkstress, The Mamaz, Idris Hassan and DIME - all who showed up to take part with music by DJ Rockstarr.

With all the fabulous Oakland women in attendance, what could be bad?

According to Traci Barlow, who planned the event, "The Summer B-Girl Jam was Awesome!!!! The workshops, BBQ, dancers, families, children, the films, the discussion, the volunteers, the special guest, the sunshine ... everything was dope!"

One of the highlights was the showing of the new film, "All the Ladies Say," which  highlights the lives of six iconic female street dancers from San Jose, Atlanta, Miami and Chicago, who have carved their own niches in the physically challenging, male-dominated breakdance world. Discussions about motherhood, sexual tension, femininity versus masculinity and the rap industry's mainstream images are a few of the themes explored by the main characters as part of their explaining the life of  a B Girl in the Hip-hop world.

Is this the first of many events celebrating women's B-girl style and power? Hope so.
