For the past few months, members of the Oakland Local team have been working with some of the food justice/food access organizations around the city, particularly in East Oakland, to help them improve their skills in understanding what is news and in using social media to get the word out about issues, events and programs.
It's been very cool to watch the resultant explosion in Facebook pages, blog posts, twitter streams and, especially, video. We got a special kick out of The Oakland Food Connection's new OakFoodJustice video stream and the great little videos on vendors at their market that went up Sunday night.
For some good examples of how social media and inexpensive multimedia can help you get the word out, take a look at the vids below from Jason Harvey and crew at OFC. (For a look at some of the stories, photos and vidoes that other workshop members have published on OL, check out this tag - EOT - we'll also share more links to work and sites they've created as we finish cataloging it.)
If you are involve with a food justice, food access, community gardening or healthy corner store program in Oakland and you would like to participate in a series of trainings designed to help you use the web, Oakland Local, your own site if you have one and social media networks to make your voice heard, get in touch!
We are scheduling trainings to resume in early October - email editor@oaklandlocal.com with your contact info and we will pass it along to our training team who can provide more info. Trainings are funded by The California Endowment and are free to qualified participants.
