An East Oakland co-op that's working to transform a formerly empty lot into a thriving green space has put out the call for some Valentine's Day assistance. Volunteers will get to share in a locally-sourced organic meal, as well as "skills, starts and stories."

Sol, or Sustaining ourselves locally, will be pruning, caring for chickens, starting seeds, weeding and working on a new greywater system from 12 to 4 p.m. on Saturday at 1236 23rd Avenue.

According to its Web site, "Here in the neighborhood of Lower San Antonio we are transforming an urban space into a center for sustainable living. By growing organic food, conserving and recycling resources, and organizing community events and workshops, we are exploring ways to make the city more healthy and liveable for all its inhabitants."

The group shares a building, just off International Boulevard, with several families, a capoeira school and artists’ studios.
