Celebrating the contributions and accomplishments of Eva Paterson, Mandela Foods Cooperative and Nicole Lee:

Eva Jefferson Paterson is the President and a founder of Equal Justice Society, a national organization dedicated to changing the law through progressive legal theory, public policy and practice. She has spent over three decades effectively advocating for civil rights in the Bay Area and California with organizations such as the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights and the California Coalition for Civil Rights.

Mandela Foods Cooperative is West Oakland's first locally-owned and operated full-service grocery store and nutrition education center. Launched in July 2009, it is leading the way for Oakland as a successful business model that focuses on providing access to healthy foods and nutrition education for historically underserved low-income and communities of color.

Nicole Lee is the Executive Director of Urban Peace Movement, which spun off from the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights' Silence the Violence campaign in 2009. Through her work with the Hotel Employees and Restaurant Employees Union (HERE) Local 2850, the East Bay Alliance for a Sustainable Economy, Oakland's Third Eye Movement, and EBC's Books Not Bars Campaign, Nicole has been a tireless advocate for the people of Oakland.

This year, we are introducing a new $1,000 award to a young community member who demonstrates an unrelenting commitment to social justice with plans to continue his/her education. We are proud to honor DeAndre Lewis as this year's recipient.
DeAndre Lewis has been in and out of California's juvenile justice system since the age of 14 and began working with the Books Not Bars campaign in 2008 when he was still at Chaderjian Youth Correctional Facility. Last year he was selected as Families of Books Not Bars' Member of the Year. This fall, he will begin a program to study psychology at UC Berkeley where he has already been admitted, or other California universities that he is considering.
