Oakland! It's never boring. I'm sitting at Woody's Cafe & Laundromat, doing the OL update, surrounded by original articlework by DESI W.O.M.E  & Ras Terms and noting how the gas prices are going up as the weather warms. Why is it always that way?

Here's what's in the news this am:

New business models for news? Just add beer-and a club venue

The East Bay Express announced it will be booking bands in the downstairs space in Old Oakland where its offices are. Given that the much-smaller Oakbook has a gallery and a magazine, does this mean media can't make a living in Oakland--or that arts and music are so powerful community media has to find ways to be involved? Will the Trib follow? (Okay, that was a joke.)

Support McCullum Youth Court now

Do you know about McCullum Youth Court? It’s a fantastic, Oakland-based youth program that provides an alternative to the juvenile justice system. You might already be familiar with them, but if not, check out the video below and consider whether you want to attend their annual luncheon on March 12th.

Chevron ain't leaving Richmond anytime soon

Chevron's announced that they may sell operations in Europe, but the Richmond plant will remain untouched. On their analysts' call last week, they said they would cut 2,000 jobs world-wide, but the Bay area isn't a focus. (More in this Business Week story.)

Teachers will still strike, but not till April 24th

That March 24th OUSD-wide teacher strike is going to happen, but not till April 24th, when the permits to make it legal will kick in.

Events: Local Clean Energy Alliance meets today, Jill Richardson speaks

The Local Clean Energy Alliance meets today, as does the AC Transit Board of Directors, but our hearts are beating because COMFOOD hero Jill Richardson is giving a talk tonight about Farm Bill, community food projects and councils, food labeling, school lunches, food safety, and animal agriculture. Find out more about it here--and have a great day--and don't forget our calendar.
