Shining Daughters Fundraiser Feb. 24

While there is no shortage of talk around ways to help Oakland's youth, this attention is often directly primarily at young men. And while this attention is often justified, young women are sometimes overlooked as they deal with their own particular issues around everything from academics and family life to body images and social skills.

Founded in 2009 by Socorro M. Reynoso and Markita Mays, the organization's stated mission is "to empower young girls in our community to reach their potential despite their obstacles and to make positive life choices that enable them to maximize their future capacity by providing academic, personal, and interpersonal support."

While still in the early stages, the organization offers several personal coaching, counseling and mentoring services designed to build both self esteem and real world skills. On April 7, Shining Daughters will host their next large event, an all day self esteem workshop for young women at the Franklin Street Recreation Center.

Tomorrow's organizational fundraiser at Mimosa Lounge offers a chance to help out a good cause and be served by a barstaff of Oakland's new scene makers, entrepreneurs and promoters including Tiffany Stapleton & Tasha Dial of Headbanger Accessories, DJ's soul.profess and D Sharp, Verse Sneakers owner Tyranny Allen, Triple Threat Online's Bennett Payne and Top Ten Social founder and Shining Daughter board member Michael Orange.  All proceeds and tips from the night will go to support Shining Daughter programming. You can find out more information on the organizations website.
