Woof! New dog park opening at West Oakland's Grove-Shafter Park Jan. 15

Grove-Shafter Park

Grove-Shafter Park

This Saturday, Jan. 15, the Longfellow Community Association, along with Dist. 1 Councilwoman Jane Brunner and the Oakland Dog Owners Group - ODOG - will host the grand opening of the Grove Shafter Dog Park.

Members of the community and city officials will come together in a day of celebration to officially welcome Oakland’s newest dog park. The event - which runs from from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. - will feature live music, refreshments, fun and dogs of every variety will accompany the festivities.

The Grove Shafter Dog Park includes separate fenced play areas for large and small dogs; ADA accessible benches and picnic tables; boulders for dogs to leap on; and, in-ground dog waste receptacles that will be emptied on a regular schedule by city crews. The dog park came to fruition as a result of ODOG’s work with the West Oakland Project Area Committee in getting a Neighborhood Projects Initiatives grant, and with assistance from Jane Brunner’s office to initiate and complete the project.
