New fashion pop-up store OAKollectiv opens Friday, May 20

Pop-up stores are the rage in other parts of the country, and world, and now one's coming to Oakland.

Oakollectiv - a fashion clothing shop - will open its doors for the first time this Friday, May 20, in downtown Oakland at 1426 Broadway (previously "The Spot"). The grand opening will feature the renowned DJ Ladies, who has opened for such talents as Erykah Badu.

Co-owners Penelope Adibe and Rachel Konte share a vision of an exciting and vital downtown Oakland shopping scene. Their ultimate goal is to create a San Francisco-like shopping experience in the heart of Oakland.

Adibe and Konte are both European-born and raised fashion designers and entrepreneurs who live and thrive in Oakland. They share the Oakollectiv space and use it to host their respective lines, Nneka and Afrobuddah, as well as the clothing line for the co-op "Guerilla Cafe" in Berkeley, of which Konte is also co-owner.

The two women have been working together on this project for more than a year after meeting at a business course at Women's Initiative. Gregory Hunter and John Monetta at the city of Oakland worked with them on their proposal and helped them realize their vision. Both women have corporate backgrounds and are keen to draw in some other designers and fashion entrepreneurs who can stay in the area as well.

They operate the store under a tiny budget, saying that they need to show that this kind of work can be done without a large budget. They use papier maché hangers and have furnished the space cheaply, yet invitingly. They emphasize the importance of recycling and reusing materials.

"I see Oakland as a Pandora's box that is bursting with passion, ready to be opened," Adibe said.

She and Konte see the magic in Oakland and said they are eager to bring what they can into the atmosphere. They want to show that good products can be made locally and that dreams can be realized cost-effectively.

Adibe became interested in fashion at the age of 4.

"I watched my parents making costumes for her dance recitals," she said, adding she considers her "Nneka" line to be a mix of street-wear with classic influences, "sort of Grace Kelly meets Beyoncé." She runs sizes 0-16 and focuses on women's wear.

Konte considers design to be her personal creative outlet and does all of the graphic designs for her line.

"[My Afrobuddah line] is all about simplicity and functionality," she said. She loves vintage and has many vintage influences and pairings with her unisize graphic shirts and handmade bags.

Konte also designs The Guerilla Cafe line. The cafe is at the old Smokey Joe's location in Berkeley.

While the store is set to stay in its downtown location only through August, Adibe and Konte said they would love to remain there more permanently. If they can't re-negotiate their lease they plan to move to a new location with the same vision, of working together to stimulate Oakland's shopping and recreate the downtown vibe.

"If you focus and dream, it can become a reality," Adibe said.
