Update: 5/29, 7 am: All work on the eastbound detour has been completed, as of 8:15 a.m. Drivers should not expect any additional delays this holiday weekend--just re-routing off the span.
Interested in knowing what's going to happen to your drive across the Bay Bridge in the next few months? Big news: it's going to involve new detours on the Oakland side starting Memorial Day weekend.
According to the Bay Bridge web site, their crews will be realigning traffic lanes and building detour west of the toll plaza so that they can then create new eastbound lanes. The good news on this project is that this process, called the Oakland Touchdown, will keep the bridge open as crews work.
The sad news: the detours that will start this month will be in place for the next two years. The bridge will remain open for the holiday weekend, but select eastbound lanes will be closed from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. on Saturday, May 28 and Sunday, May 29 as the detours are put in place.
However, you don't have to get in your car to see the changes--Bay Bridge Explorer is a new Ipad app that lets you drive from San Francisco to Oakland as if you were travelling through the construction. Created by the Bay Bridge Public Information Office, the app is free and works for the Ipad and the Iphone.
According to Mashable, the app that shows all these changes is state of the art. Built on a classic 3D videogame world platform, the Unreal Development Kit from Epic Games, the app uses designs and specs from bridge engineers and final development from done by local 3D design industry leader Autodesk to create a virtual experience of the new traffic flow.
And of course, as contruction on the bridge trudges into 2013, the app will show those changes--as long as you haven't deleted it by then.
Bonus info: So what's being done, exactly? Here's what the engineers' say:
The Oakland Touchdown (OTD), located just west of the
Bay Bridge toll plaza, will connect Interstate 80 in Oakland to the new
side-by-side decks of the new East Span. The project involves building
two roadway sections and a new electrical substation, in addition to
extensive relocation of underground utilities.
For westbound
drivers on I-80, the OTD will be their introduction to the new,
East Span of the Bay Bridge. For eastbound drivers from San Francisco,
this section of the bridge will carry them from the Skyway to the East Bay.
Memorial Day is more than good food and sales and bad traffic.
If, like most people now outside of rural areas, you’ve never personally known someone in the US military who died in the far away places where we've sent them, here are two who deserve a second of thought today.
