Sept. 25 - As I write this, some 350 people - most members of the Bay Area's Chinese-American community - are undertaking an emotional voyage to Angel Island. Many of the folks participating had ancestors who were detained at the island's immigration station in the early 20th century, but had never before visited the site.

This week saw the most significant legal ruling yet in the 4-year, "David vs. Goliath" fight for justice at the Emeryville Woodfin Suites Hotel.
The big news: Alameda Superior Court Judge Steven Brick upheld a city order for the hotel to pay $200,000 in back wages to dozens of working immigrant mothers.
Last Thursday's march to
defend health care for working families sent a powerful message to Oakland's top
hotels: working families deserve affordable health care, and the hard-working
housekeepers and food service workers of Unite Here local 2850 are passionately
prepared to fight for their rights.
