Although it seemed like some air was taken out of this forum after some miscommunication, the room was packed within a few minutes of the start of the Sierra Club sponsored green forum.

 Happy Bike To Work Day, Oakland!  This month has already seen a lot of energy from long-time bikers and their inspired, soon-to-be two-wheeled compatriots.   

For many of us, riding a bike is, well, not always "just like riding a bike".  As cycling becomes more and more popular as the main mode of transport around Oakland, we will be seeing more newbies on the road.  Sadly, we're also seeing many Ghost Bikes around the community.  Oakland Local wants to make sure that you get to work, to class, to the store, or to the bars in one piece.  But how do you do that exactly? We put the question to the East Bay Bike Coalition online community and here are some of the answers they gave us.

Oakland is stuck between a cop and an arts space.  Last night the City Council held a second special meeting to address the city's unprecedented $42.6 million budget gap for the 2010-2011 fiscal year.

The fiscal elephant in the room -- police compensation and possible layoffs -- was discussed at length, but council took no specific action on this contentious issue last night. However, they did agree to delay cuts to the Oakland Museum, since the museum is negotiating a public-private partnership that could brighten its financial future...
