Workshop: Diesel Car Maintenance

Want to know how to maintain and perform service on a diesel or biodiesel car? Improve power by up to 20% and increase MPG, and increase understanding and competency. Participans should bring their cars (Mercedes 1974-85 240d/300d, td, sd, cd, Volkswagen pre-1986, or Scout--although others may attend the lecture) and get ready for some hands-on learning. Using a demonstration car, this event begins with a 30-minute lecture and discussion about diesel engines: how glow plugs work, fuel filters/lines, fuel injector pumps, starters, coolant, how brakes work, how to perform compression tests, and how to improve mileage.

Workshop participants, under the supervision of the instructor, will then learn how to perform a car inspection, do a glow plug test, use a jack, and remove tires, plus one of the following: changing the fuel filter, upgrading the fuel lines, using a fuel tank strainer (Mercedes only--the gas tank must be near empty and contain no diesel fuel). The group will work on 2 cars at a time. Each participant will work on his or her own car, and others.

This workshop is taught by Biofuel Oasis-recommended mechanic Billy Jacobs, who has over 12 years' experience and a degree in auto technology. He is also a member of the Berkeley Biodiesel Coop and biodiesel homebrewer.

This class is limited to 6 - 8 cars, with pre-registration (by phone or email) and payment required. The cost is $140 for the lecture, workshop, and parts, $30 for the lecture only when pre-registering; or $35 for the lecture only at the door.
