Hey Moncia, you are not the only one that feels that way. It's not that the vendors aren't around, it's that the city's zoning/permits are outdated and don't allow street food vendors to operate in the same way as other cities. (except along the International corridor) That's why Emeryville is full of great eats during the work week. Primo's Parrilla (www.vamosprimos.com) just launched yesterday - they are an Oakland based biz but are currently in Emeryville during the day because Emeryville recognizes the value and offers the right permit. More than anything I'd love to see them in O-town!

Thanks, Anna. SF had the same issues but the mobile food vendors - trucks, carts, and folks on bikes - banded together and recently made headway with the city regulators. I chatted with Abe Espiritu (surprisingly, no relation!) of @lumpiacart about the fight with the city and he said they've made some traction. I think the key for all these food vendors to form a solid community in order to get some of these zoning and permit laws modified. I gotta say, the number of street food tweets I follow has grown exponentially because the @lumpiacart is promoting @cremebruleecart, @cremebruleecart is big upping @soulcocina, ad infinitum. Business parks, nightclubs, art galleries, and even bricks and mortar establisments and organizing corrals of food carts to get people into their joints. The SF food vendors have gotten so much from press from the New York Times to competing for the best burrito against Bobby Flay on the Food Network. We got so many talented underground chefs on the hustle in Oakland, too!

Oakland has a city ordinance concerning permits for food vending push carts. Chapter 5.49.020 "...'Vending' is the act of selling or causing to be sold any of the follwing items: produce, prepared foods and beverages, prepackaged foods and non-alcoholic beverages." My goal is to open a hot food cart which I've already spoken to the Council about today.
