As a presenter at yesterday's 2nd annual Man Up! Conference on Oakland, CA, it has become patently clear that the majority of young black men and boys in Oakland are daily growing desensitized to their own disadvantage and oppression. As late as 7th grade, our boys have not been taught about the seriousness of the challenges facing them, nor have they been prepared to engage their heart and mind as tools, even as weapons, to forge a brighter and more balanced future for themselves. The culture of nihilism, of gangs, and of prison have supplanted formal schooling and non-criminal, reasoned thought as a viable mode of being for the younger generations. Man up, black men, and continue to reach out to these boys! The biblical fire has already come. We (re)build out of ashes.

There are definitely serious issues in the black community and our youth need direction, hope, mentoring and answers to questions about how to live a better life and prosper. We have created a website AfroDaddy.com to help black youth, black fathers, and black men in general learn some survival skills that traditionally we may not be aware of. It is always better to teach a man to fish, and we need to show our youth where the poles are, how to get the boat, how to catch the fish and finally how to sell the extra fish to make a profit.
Brothers, we need to support each other. We need to ask the right questions and find a place that has the answers. What we are trying to build at The Black Man Survival Guide is a place where we can do both. Visit our site and show your support as we will continue to try to support men like you Corey who are trying to do the right things for our community.
