Despite a near-torrential rainstorm, more than 600 people piled into the venerable Grand Lake Theater on Friday night, for the premiere of the WWII historical drama “Red Tails.” The sold-out crowd - a second screening drew about 400 people, for about 1,000 total - was attempting to send a message to Hollywood: African American movies can be boffo box office hits.

Saturday was the 2nd annual Oakland Urban Paths walk and shop. Ten people (to say nothing of the dog) explored urban walkways between Lakeshore and Piedmont Avenue and back again.

Oakland went crazy when the long-shuttered Kwik Way reopened with new owners in April. 

There were lines out the door, people racing to check out how much the menu changed, lots of excitement. So four to six weeks in, how's it going over there? Is the Kwik Way still popular, and more importantly, is the food good?
