I’ll never forget my first sight of Vice Chocolates’ farmer’s market booth: black and purple, more dark carnival than dark chocolate.

Now here at I-Li Chang Brice’s workshop in a corner brick building near Jack London Square, the chocolate takes on a more innocent air. That is until I-Li says, “Taste the skeleton,” her tattooed arm holding out a bag of dark brown bones.

On Saturday, October 22, EBBC teamed up with Walk Oakland Bike Oakland, Jack London Square, and New Belgium Brewery to bring you the biggest celebration of the bicycle in regional history. Riders from all over the Bay rolled out to the waterfront for a terrific day of pedal-powered music, food, rides and more.

Three years of competition, practices and crashes, have helped 16-year-old Page Bisenieks-Robertson to become a nationally ranked bike racer. 
 
“I finished dead last in my first race,” Page said. “It was a big event and I wanted to try it for a long time. My bike broke a little.

This past weekend was the Eat Real Festival in Jack London Square. It featured food and drink from Bay Area producers, music, crafts, and a variety of food-related demonstrations, from cheese making to backyard chickens. With food trucks and vendors from all over the Bay Area, there was a lot to choose from.

I got a different look at things this year, as I volunteered to help with setup and beverage service.

Promising to be even better than last year, this year’s Eat Real Festival in Jack London Square will showcase new vendors and producers, as well as local favorites. 

The three-day food extravaganza runs through Sunday, Sept. 25.
