I’ll never forget my first sight of Vice Chocolates’ farmer’s market booth: black and purple, more dark carnival than dark chocolate.

Now here at I-Li Chang Brice’s workshop in a corner brick building near Jack London Square, the chocolate takes on a more innocent air. That is until I-Li says, “Taste the skeleton,” her tattooed arm holding out a bag of dark brown bones.

This past Sunday’s Temescal Street Fair brought out the best of Oakland.

Blessed with warm July weather - it was rescheduled after rain sullied the original June date - the event was fabulously successful and better-attended than last year from the looks of things.

In the lush farming village of Billo, Ethiopia, 297 children cram into a three room, dirt-floor school, eager to learn.

Until this year, they sat on rocks.

Now, thanks to Birtukan Beyenssa an Ethiopian-American from the East Bay, they sit at smooth, newly-purchased wooden desks.
