from our friends at WOBO: On Friday September 16th, Oakland businesses and organizations will participate in International Park(ing) Day by transforming metered parking spaces into alternative public uses such as campfires and miniature parks. International Park(ing) Day, started in 2005, challenges people to rethink the way streets are used.

In Oakland, where street parking can be very controversial, citizens, businesses, and environmental advocates will offer an alternative vision of public spaces - and have some fun along the way!

Pedestrian advocacy organization Walk Oakland Bike Oakland (WOBO) and participating businesses, including coffeeshops, art galleries, and design firms, will offer a stamped passport with discounts for Oaklanders who visit many spaces.

  • 3PM: WOBO will lead a bicycle tour of all of the city's parklets, leaving from Cole Coffee, 307 63rd St at College Ave.
  • 3:30PM: WOBO will lead a walking tour of downtown Oakland parklets, leaving from Farley's East, 33 Grand Ave near Broadway.

There will also be Park(ing) Day activities on Saturday.

WOBO will issue a press release on Thursday with more information. To join the walking or biking tour, please confirm in advance.
