Oakland Mayor Jean Quan on Monday announced the appointment of Anne Campbell Washington as Chief of Staff effective immediately.

“As part of our ongoing effort to restructure my administration and reinvent the Office of the Mayor, we are very pleased to have Anne join our staff,” Quan said. “Anne is a consummate professional, has indispensable experience in city government and shows a tremendous commitment to Oakland. She is not new to this position – Anne served as Chief of Staff to Mayor Jerry Brown in 2003-2004. She has served in senior leadership positions for many years in the City Administrator’s Office, the Budget Office and the Oakland Fire Department. Her integrity and strategic vision will be tremendous assets as we concentrate on our goals to move Oakland forward.

“The Quan Administration is focused on Oakland’s toughest challenges: public safety, job creation and education,” Washington said.  “I look forward to tackling these challenges with Mayor Quan, City Administrator Santana, the entire City Council and City staff.  Oakland is at its best when we all come together to do our part.  I love Oakland – its vibrant soul, its unique local businesses, its neighborhoods.  I am so proud to serve this city that I love.”

As Chief of Staff, Washington will oversee the activities of the mayor’s Office.  She will serve as a senior policy advisor to the mayor and will work closely with the City Administrator, agency directors, City Councilmembers and city staff on the development and implementation of city policy.

She previously served as the director of Operations and Special Projects at the Stuart Foundation in San Francisco and executive director of the I Have A Dream Foundation in Pittsburgh, Penn. She holds a Master of Public Policy degree from the Goldman School of Public Policy at the University of California, Berkeley, and a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Management/Graphic Communications Management from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh.

Washington lives in Oakland with her husband Glynn, the creator and host of NPR’s Snap Judgment, and their two children, Bahia and Quincy. Her current volunteer efforts include Oakland Children’s Fairyland, East Bay Agency for Children, Blue Skies for Children, Montclair Elementary School and the Oakland Unified School District’s Measure B Oversight Committee.
