Two thousand-eleven was a very good year for Oakland Local. 

We hit two years of operation and saw our audience engagement, quality of reporting, size of the community and number of contributors rise dramatically. We gained some new and fulfilling partnerships, including one with KQED, and continued with some original media partners, including New America Media, SF Gate and Yahoo! News. And we kept working with our wonderful community and nonprofit partners.

Last year, we were a finalist for an Oakland Grown Award, won an Oaklandish Innovator's Award and won awards from The Society of Professional Journalists, the East Bay Press Club and The California Grand Jurors' Association.

We also expanded our Oakland Local Academy program, developing a training program with the support of The California Endowment and trained members of nonprofit organizations, small-business people and job seekers in how to tell their own stories and use social media to get the word out and helped lead a really successful day of tech development, Code for Oakland, which led to an Oakland team getting a national award for their app.

Twenty-eleven is also the year we started to get serious about selling ads, and we brought in some wonderful advertisers, many of whom have continued to invest in outreach with Oakland Local.

In so many ways, Oakland Local is a nonprofit news start-up, with many people contributing time, effort and creativity far beyond what we can pay them. Our ability to pay our team is directly based on the advertising we sell, the grants we win, the training and consulting services we offer and the sponsorships and individual donations you, our supporters, give us.
