I never expected to lunch with Oakland’s incoming Mayor-elect Jean Quan. Yet there I was last week seated at a table outside Genji Restaurant sharing edamame beans and chatting about her transition into being Oakland’s next leader.

The Friday morning after election day and the initial results told us that Don Perata might have won-sixty or seventy volunteers had crowded into the little Jean Quan headquarters on Grand Avenue. We were still in shock that Don Perata could have received the most first place votes.

Update: News comes from the  Register's office about the results of Instand Runoff Voting at 4 PM today,  Mayoral Candidate Jean Quan will hold a press conference at 4:30 pm at Oakland City Hall-- on the steps outside, weather permitting, or inside if it is raining.

Last night at midnight, Don Perata was leading the race with 36 percent of the vote, according to results from the Alameda County Registrar of Voters, Jean Quan was in second place with 25 percent of the vote, Rebecca Kaplan in third with 20 percent of the vote, based on all 254 precincts reporting,

As voters cast their ballots today, Larry Lionel Young, Jr. hopes for a game changer. A 30-year-old African American and Oakland native, Young is the youngest candidate for mayor of Oakland and hopes to be the one to relieve Ron Dellums. It was the city's current mayor, in fact, who inspired him to run.
