When Actual Café opened two-and-a-half years ago on a barren strip of San Pablo Avenue near Alcatraz Avenue, owner Sal Bednarz tapped into a neighborhood need more profound than lattes and quality bites - a sense of community.

Where did the new parklet go? 

After a fun celebration of the new parklet created by Actual Cafe staff and lots of volunteers, the whole parklet was hauled away and is now missing in action.

Most of us would probably like to know our neighbors better. Sal Bednarz actually did something about it. A year ago, Bednarz opened the Actual Cafe, a hip hang-out spot on the corner of San Pablo and Alcatraz in North Oakland .

It looked like the people spilling out of the Actual Cafe and onto the sidewalks on 65th Street and San Pablo on Friday night weren't feel bad at all about having to squeeze past their fellow revellers to nab a bit of a free empanada with fiery chimichurri sauce, or a bit of a turkey sandwich.
