Most of us would probably like to know our neighbors better. Sal Bednarz actually did something about it. A year ago, Bednarz opened the Actual Cafe, a hip hang-out spot on the corner of San Pablo and Alcatraz in North Oakland .

Studies show that African American living in the East Bay are twice as likely to live in poverty, twice as likely to become victims of violent crime and twice as likely to be unemployed compared to other metropolitan cities on the West Coast. 

Focusing on its goal of winning real and immediate policy changes on these and other issues, the Black Organizing Project – BOP – is building leaders who are not afraid to think outside of the box.

Today, as we mark the anniversary of four police officers gunned down in Oakland, let us also show support for the community where that tragedy took place.

East Oakland is where Lovelle Mixon killed those police officers, and that long-suffering district continues to pay the price for those deaths.
