"Twenty-eleven" was a tumultuous, even turbulent year for Oakland – a roller coaster ride from a political standpoint, to be sure.

This past weekend was the annual Jingletown Holiday Art Walk. The area is full of artists working in different media, and regularly have open studios to show it off.

It's also just an interesting place to walk around. In part because the area is decorated with mosaics, murals and sculptures created by the local artists. It's a fun, funky place.

Lots of different stuff to do coming up in Oakland. It's a First Friday this week, so Uptown and Downtown will be hopping. The current forecast has the rains stopping by then -- let's hope the forecasters are right!

This past Friday was a good example of why Oakland has become a cultural mecca.

A few years ago, that statement would have invited ridicule. But these days, Oakland’s renaissance is in full swing, to the extent where East Bay culturati often have to choose between two (or more) equally-compelling events going on at the same time.
