Where Oakland's Uptown neighborhood meets Pill Hill, you'll find a low-key, friendly hangout that's perfect for meeting friends, enjoying a reasonably priced casual meal or cup of coffee or savoring a pint of Strongbow or Guinness drawn in British style.

It's the CommonWealth Cafe and Public House, at 2882 Telegraph. Here's why it's one of my favorite places to chill out in Oakland.

It’s midnight at the Oasis. Soulful singer Maria Muldaur is nowhere to be found, but if she were, she’d surely approve of the body-moving sounds of dancehall reggae coming out of the speakers, and the island-themed patio with an open-air ceiling.

Oakland Local will host a Dive Bar Holiday Drinkup on Dec. 16 at our favorite (so far) Oakland dive bar, Kingfish Pub & Cafe in the Temescal neighborhood (near 51st & Claremont, just off Telegraph).

12/15 Update: We have 25 people signed up--come join the fun--and dig the shuffleboard, madness & popcorn.

RSVP NOW on our Meetup.com group.

We use the term "dive bar" with great affection and respect. To us, a great dive bar is about low-key local flavor and people. It's accessible and welcoming to folks of any class, age, race, and ethnicity. And it's cheap!

Kingfish is all of these...
