According to sponsor The East Bay Bicycle Coalition, over 17,000 riders commuting to work were counted at 143 energizer stations this morning.  That is a 22 %  increase in cyclists over 2011.  Mayor Jean Quan of Oakland rode 8 miles on her trusty electric bike from Eastmont Mall to City Hall, accompanied by a large contingent of riders.

This past Sunday was a great event combining several of my favorite things: beer, bikes and Oakland. It was the Tour de Bière 2012, led by The Grand Cru, as a fundraiser for the East Bay Bike Coalition. With a full day of biking and beer tasting, plus discounts at several destinations, it was a bargain at $25 per person. So it was unsurprising when tickets sold out for it in 4 days.

Tucked away on the east side of Lake Merritt is a little shop that you wish you had stumbled upon on accident. It’s one of those gems you find and then can’t believe everyone you like isn’t hanging out there all the time.

Saturday was Pedalfest, a celebration of bikes, cycling, food, family and fun. There was perfect weather for the large crowd that turned out.

There were handmade bikes of all shapes and sizes, a vintage bike museum, a BMX riding demo, the Whiskey Drome, a kids' area and bike parade, food, live music, beer, and of course valet bike parking.
