Confronted with a mounting array of serious legal concerns, the Oakland City Council Public Safety Committee on Feb. 8 again delayed action on its cannabis cultivation initiative, including a plan to license additional dispensaries.

So the letter the City Council asked City Attorney John Russo to write back in January to the DOJ about Oakland's plans to have industrial pot farms has now gotten a response. It's pretty straightforward: industrial pot farms are illegal, and if Oakland permits them, we're going to come after the city.

Whatever the fate of efforts to legalize recreational use of marijuana at the state level, Oakland is forging ahead on the medical marijuana front. Two medical marijuana items were on the Oakland City Council agenda last Tuesday night. 

First, the Council voted to double the number of permits for medical cannabis dispensaries in the city from four to eight.

The medical marijuana business is going strong in Oakland.

In July, the City Council approved construction of four permitted production facilities. And with the constant flow of clients to local dispensaries, workers now are unionizing.

While some cities are seeking to restrict or even impose a temporary moratorium on new medical marijuana dispensaries, Oakland will be considering doubling the number of dispensaries within its jurisdiction.
