Most of us would probably like to know our neighbors better. Sal Bednarz actually did something about it. A year ago, Bednarz opened the Actual Cafe, a hip hang-out spot on the corner of San Pablo and Alcatraz in North Oakland .

A full moon will rise and fall over the Oakland Museum of California just in time for Dia de los Muertos. The Seventeenth Annual Community Celebration for Days of the Dead runs from noon to 4:30 p.m. this Saturday, Oct. 23.

In keeping with the holiday's Meso-American origins, ofrendas or altars decorated with obsidian and food offerings will line the museum's halls. Incense smoke and performers will dance for the departed souls. Marigolds, thought to coax the dead with their scent, will adorn the day in celebration of life.

On a warm breezy Saturday morning on August 28, 2010, the 47th anniversary of Dr. King’s “I have a dream” speech, a small group of East Oaklanders gathered at the Eastmont Branch Library to celebrate one step forward in their dreams.

The little bar on Christopher Street in Greenwich Village was pulsing with tension.
 
Though police raids on New York's gay bars were normal, before this night was over, drag queens would escape paddy wagons, use their high heels as weapons, straddle cops and beat them. Several nights of riots followed, marking the Stonewall Inn — a gay bar in the West Village — as the birthplace of the LGBT liberation movement.
