Police Accountability. It’s a controversial topic in Oakland, a double-edged sword, which cuts deeply into the fabric of the community.

On one hand, there are the tough-on-crime folks who maintain that desperate times call for desperate measures, and that we should not only maintain higher levels of police staffing, but that police should be allowed to do their jobs, no matter what it takes.

On the other hand, there are the civil rights activists and those concerned about police abuse, who point to cases like the shooting death of Derrick Jones as proof that police are out of control and need to be reigned in.

Where’s the middle ground? The Citizens' Police Review Board.

Back in July, the OPD shot Fred Collins, an unarmed man, on E 12th Street, after he came toward them acting erratically. Collins was shot by at least 5 cops--and was reported to be saying "shoot me"--but there were real questions about the barrage of bullets--and the mass reaction.

In the wake of the senseless acts of violence that have taken away the lives of Oscar Grant, Derrick Jones and countless other black men, I've grown to feel numb.  In my childhood, death and murder plagued my mind.  Sometimes people I knew were taken away by natural causes.

The OPD has released an update in the Derrick Jones shooting case: the news is that Jones was carrying a small electronic scale when he was shot by police on Monday night. The OPD said that a small glass vial of marijuana was also found in his pockets.

George Holland, the president of the Oakland branch of the NAACP, has issued a statement on behalf of the organization on the killing of East Oakland resident Derrick Jones, shot by the police earlier this month.  Holland's statement characterizes Jones as  small businessman and dedicated father and says:  "The CA NAACP is calling for an immediate meeting with Mayor Ron Dellums,
