Oakland is one step closer to living up to its aspiration to be a model green city. Oakland City Council held a special meeting Tuesday night to hear city staff recommendations and public comments concerning the Energy and Climate Action Plan it is working on.

Several times a week, Oaklanders Ken Carradine and Nekeyra Wells fill their backpacks with compact florescent light bulbs and grab their clipboards to venture through the city performing green house calls. The team conducts free energy evaluations and retrofits as part of a new job training program that started in February.

Not long ago, energy efficiency & conservation were considered the ugly step-brothers of environmentalism.  They were overshadowed by their sexier siblings--solar panels and wind turbines.
