A Better World is Possible is the tag line of the US Social Forum and if it was possible to bottle the hope and determination in the rooms, or release it as a gas in the atmosphere, there's no question our world would be a better place. As I write this, I am sitting in the Media Center, a giant dining room turned into a computer lab with space for writers, folks who need tech support (from Oakland's Aspiraton Tech, of course), broadcasters and a press conference space.

Maybe it happened over the border in Berkeley, but that doesn't mean Thursday's Take Back the Mic! was anything but a hard-core Oakland event.  Organized by Bay Localize's Dave Room (aka Melia's Papa), the event brought together LA-based green sustainability talent Derrick Ashong and his partner Jonathan M Gramling, who together make up Soulfege, with the Town's own green hip-hop players Audiopharmacy, Seasunz & Ambessa FiyaPowa, Aaron Ableman Ensemble and Sunru all joining in.

Low-income truckers who would have been shut out of working at the Port of Oakland on Jan. 4  now have a reprieve, thanks to the the Bay Area Air Quality Management District and the California Air Resources Board.

These two entities have come up with an additional $3 million in what Mayor Dellum's spokesperson, Paul Rose, describes as "grants."
