So where are you shopping this weekend?  I'll be heading over to my local community farmer's market, one of the 4 or 5 phat beets produce has set up in North Oakland in the past 18 months.  If I lived in East Oakland, I'd be heading to the Oakland Food Connection's community farmers market, and if I lived in West Oakland, I'd be out at the Mandela Market or City Slicker Farms--or getting my grub box from People's Grocery.

A local food justice group is ramping up its farmer's market at Children's Hospital & Research Center Oakland with more stands, vouchers for some hospital patients, an innovative produce box program and a demonstration booth by People's Grocery, as well as plans for a nearby community garden in the coming months.

The market will offer two produce stands, J&P Organics and J and J Farms, along with goodies from an Oakland Mediterranean market called Med Food and Berkeley's Vital Vittles Breads and Bakery.

Each week we attempt to stay within a budget at the Farmer's Market.

With some creativity, I can keep the weekly trip under $20. However, we occasionally splurge on some of the great meats, cheeses, jams, honey and other items with a $10+ price tag. Last week, it was almond flour at the Jack London Square Farmers Market.

Oakland has many neighborhoods where social action has improved food access, in West Oakland in particular. But many people continue to live in areas that qualify as food deserts, where there are no outlets to purchase healthy food within walking distance.
