Despite the tough economy, the past year has seen a surge of art galleries, pop-up shops and retail stores open up in downtown Oakland.

Many of these spaces - which include Oakollectiv, Oaklandish, SMSHBX and the cathedral building - are owned or operated by people of color.

Rock Paper Scissors and a host of local bike organizations are kicking off a new project for spring 2011 called Oakland Art ride - OAR - that takes riders around town to see art work and crafts from local artisans. Here's the sked for the first one on May 7:
