Immediately upon entering Oakland artist and activist Favianna Rodriguez’ studio, I notice a turtle tank. She mentioned that he might come closer, given that I was an unknown visitor. Her pet turtle seemed full, curious and somehow open to new things.

On June 24, Judge Robert M. Freedman gave outgoing City Attorney John Russo a going-away present: An affirmative ruling on the Fruitvale gang injunction.

As is his wont, Russo sent out a tweet announcing victory after an unprecedented eight-month long court battle.

On Friday afternoon, Judge Robert M. Freedman imposed a temporary injunction against 40 alleged members of the Nortenos gang. The ruling came in a relatively brief hearing, which lacked the drama of earlier hearings which began some eight months ago.

As defense lawyers walked into court, they were handed a copy of a six-page document which contained the judge’s decision.
