Yes, Virginia, not only are there still Santa Clause believers, but there are real people in the hills of Oakland that are not afraid to admit that Christmas really isn’t Christmas unless you are viewing the 1965 classic, "A Charlie Brown Christmas," or even the 1947 gem, "It’s A Wonderful Life." 

Because our favorite holiday begins the day after Halloween - and could start the day after Labor Day next year depending on the economy - by the time Dec. 1 rolls around the words "bah-humbug" come bubbling forth from the deep recesses of our thoughts.

As the Art & Soul Festival celebrates its 10th year, it is also celebrating its expansion in becoming one of the summer’s premier concerts. It now spans two days and brings thousands from across the country into Oakland’s Civic Center. But this wasn’t always the case.

Bishop Walter Hawkins, one of the Bay Area's most-renowned Gospel artists, died this weekend. He was 61 years old and battling pancreatic cancer.

Although it’s been almost two weeks since the legendary Bishop Walter Hawkins died and less than a week since a public tribute and funeral were held for him, Oaklanders and gospel fans around the globe are still feeling the impact of his loss.

Oakland, CA: A who’s who of the gospel world is gathering to pay final respects to Grammy Award winning gospel legend, Bishop Walter Hawkins, who passed away July 11th after a two-year battle with pancreatic cancer.
