After a historic election that garnered national attention, Jean Quan was sworn in  Monday afternoon as the 49th mayor of Oakland in the restored Fox Theater in the Uptown District.

Quan is the first female mayor of Oakland and the first female Asian-American mayor of a major U.S. city.

As a part of the inaugural events, Mayor-elect Jean Quan will be leading a “Remembering and Making History” walk, where she will retrace her own and Oakland’s history from Chinatown to the Fox Theater.

The march will reach Malonga Casquelourd Center for the Arts, home of the SOA offices at 9:45a.m. The schedule for the march follows the listing of the pre-inauguaral events.

This was a defining year for the city of Oakland.

In 2010, we saw street demonstrations, a new mayor get elected -- and, for the first time, city police officers were handed pink slips en masse. The Oakland Museum of California reopened this year, the city hosted its first marathon and the Oakland Underground Film Festival held its first summer event.

I never expected to lunch with Oakland’s incoming Mayor-elect Jean Quan. Yet there I was last week seated at a table outside Genji Restaurant sharing edamame beans and chatting about her transition into being Oakland’s next leader.

Now that the glow from her mayoral election win has faded (along with the Twitter and parking tickets snafus), Jean Quan is getting down to business. And that means tackling Oakland’s biggest problem — its finances.

“I hope to have a budget done by the end of March, which is two months earlier than usual, so that there will be more community discussion,” Quan said in a recent interview with Oakland Local.
