Oakland Local is seeking a smart and fast working News Associate to work with the Editor and Managing Editor to produce simple stories and briefs for the website. News Associate will work on deadline, producing three to five stories per week from press releases, community news sources and calendar listings. Stories will average 15-300 words in length.

Since Nov. 2, Occupy Oakland followers and activists have had their own daily website and print newspaper to read to make sense of the Occupy Oakland movement.

Although the principal operations of the Oakland Tribune will remain in Walnut Creek and San Jose, the Bay Area News Group announced today that a new "open newsroom" in downtown Oakland will provide space for community meetings, blogger desks, and free public Wi-Fi.

When Oakland Local decided to go mobile, the first thing we wanted to know was what kinds of mobile phones do people in Oakland have, and how are they using them?

Almost every adult in Oakland has a cell phone. Most of these phones can do far more than just voice calls - but their capabilities, and how people use them, vary widely.

So in order to figure out what kinds of mobile services we should offer, last summer Oakland Local conducted in-person surveys with 84 cell phone users in various parts of town.
