Hundreds of men and women gathered at Lake Merritt earlier this month for the Second Annual Oakland Black and Brown LGBT Pride. 

San Francisco-born Michelle Mitchell founded the event because there were no other black and Brown prides in Northern California.

Tina Mabry never set out to become your conventional Hollywood blockbuster director – nor is she trying to be.

Yet, with her nationally acclaimed feature film Mississippi Damned – a true-to-life drama about a black family struggling with poverty, alcoholism, homophobia and racism in the rural south – the filmmaker is making huge strides in bringing independent black queer cinema to the masses.

This past weekend, Oakland held its first ever BlackOUT, a LGBTQ Black Pride festival. This historical event was marked by fundraisers, workshops and a well-attended festival at Oakland’s Lake Merritt Park.

On July 20, the city of Oakland approved a resolution to make Sept. 5, 2010, “Oakland Pride Day.”
