With April being Genocide Awareness and Prevention Month, local genocide survivors, community leaders, students and neighbors participated in the first Bay Area Walk Against Genocide. The day of reflection featured speeches, advocacy training and a collective walk around Oakland's Lake Merritt.

Families from schools and homes concerned about the health effects of nine cellular antennas that Verizon Wireless plans to locate near two elementary schools have organized a colorful and musical protest march from the planned site across from the North Oakland Community Charter School (NOCCS) and Anna Yates Elementary School in Emeryville to a local Verizon store on Friday, November 19th at 3pm.

It's three days after the verdict, and Oakland is quiet. People are at church, or watching the World Cup finals -- which, for some people, is the same thing. The streets of downtown are eerily calm, a concrete island after the storm. Or maybe before another one arrives.

So folks are gearing up to voice their dissent the day of the verdict;  hopefully, it's non-violently. Here are some tips on what to bring / wear and how to  prepare for a protest that has the potential to escalate to a rebellion. The best tip I can give you is that although you determine how you are going to participate, in high tension situations another person's actions can make that choice for you.

On May 1, thousands marched through Fruitvale and down International Boulevard in Oakland to City Hall, for a lively, emotional rally.

Carrying American flags and posters with messages including "Brown and Proud," "We are all Arizona" and "Legalizacion Ahora," participants listened to speeches from organizers from Mujeres Unidas y Activas, Anakbayan East Bay, Xicana Moratorium Project and Filipino Advocates for Justice on a day when worker's rights and solidarity were celebrated.
